Thanks for the article. This last statement really caught my attention. I
have often thought about where River is now and if he has escaped the
troubles which led to his premature death. A few years ago, I began to study
Tibetan Buddhism and now I have adopted it as my religious practice. As most
of you probably know, Buddhists believe in reincarnation. Today I was
watching a documentary film about the Drepung Monastery in India (Tibetans in
exile) and their quest in 1991 to find the reincarnation of their beloved
Lama. The film followed the monks throughout the whole process of
determining where they would find the reborn Lama. First they received a
report of a special child in a village in Tibet. Then they consulted His
Holiness the Dalai Lama and prayed for a vision from the Nechung Oracle
(Great Spirit of Tibet). It is truly a wonderful phenomenon to observe. The
video of the boy was very inspiring and it did a good job illustrating this
unique ritual within the Tibetan tradition. Anyway, I shared this story with
you all to illicit response on your belief as to River's current spiritual
and/or spiritual state. Most Lamas are identified within 5 years of their
death. As we all know, this last October marked 5 years since River pasted
away. Now, I am not suggesting that we should all venture out on a journey
to find his reincarnation. Nor am I comparing him to a Lama. I just thought
it would be an interesting idea to ponder. =)
