I've made so many good friends here, and I'd like to mention a story
about one... Daniella!

After watching Dogfight, I told her how I wanted the Bob Dylan
Freewheelin' Album because Rose had it, and they played it when
Birdlace and Rose where in the bed. "Don't think Twice, its Alright"
is the song.

Well she bought it off Ebay for me and had it sent to my house for my
birtday! (Feb 21) I just got it and on the address label its
says, "Matty" (my nickname that seems to follow me).

And on the inside she had the sender write "Happy Birtday"

I made Toast (I make the best toast on this earth, I guarantee it,
you'd have to try it to believe me) and chocolate milk and listened
to Don't think twice, its alright. IT was great.

Thank you Dani for making my birthday special! I look forward to more
of our phone conversations!

Hi! Isn't the soundtrack on dogfight wonderful? I don't think they
ever released a soundtrack so over the years I have gathered the
songs. And I love the scene in the movie where Rose shows Eddie her
favourite musicians on her wall.

I especially love dylan's "don't think twice it's alright", baez's
"silver dagger", seeger's "we shall overcome", and malvina reynolds
"what have they done to the rain". I haven't been able to find the
last yet but I do have some of reynolds stuff. I think it was that
movie that got me into folk music.

oh, there was only one thing that bugged me in the movie. you know
when eddie jokes about "peter, paul, and mary" and he says that
they're the only folk singers he knows? Rose then says vehemently that
they're not real folk singers because they don't write their own
songs. I never got that... in folk music, the singers often don't
write their own music. Joan Baez for example, rarely wrote her own
songs. So, that part always baffled me.

Well, MARY Travers has only written one song I know about, but PETER
Yarrow and PAUL Stookey are prolific songwriters. The trio recorded
many of Peter's and Paul's songs, although they recorded multitudes
of songs written by others. Maybe the scriptwriter was just
unaware...or ignorant of what folk music really is.
It is music that has grown and evolved in a spontaneous way from the
experiences of those who have lived their lives close to the land and
independent of anything like modern technology. Folk music comes out
of the agricultural communities, not out of the industrial
communities. It represents and expresses the full-life sensibilities
of those who live in that way. Theirs are songs of triumph and
tragedy with regard to all kinds of events in their lives and
culture. "Country music" (USA) is a type of folk music, though folk
music itself has a much larger statement to make than just that of
the sub-category of country music.
Early in their career, Peter Yarrow described "Peter, Paul and Mary"
as "urban folksingers"...by which he meant that the trio sang real
and true folk music, but that they presented it in more polished and
formal ways than the original folksingers might. Peter, Paul and Mary
are excellent musicians with a great deal of formal training...as
real folksingers frequently do not. The songs they wrote frequently
had a "folk music feel" to them, but they were "urban" folk songs
because they had been formally composed rather than having evolved
spontaneously over many years and many generations.
Bob Dylan, himself, would be considered an "urban folksinger"...but
not all of his songs are folk songs!
Then, too, at least where the DOGFIGHT script is concerned, most
people who were not around in the sixties (as I was) and who may
never even have heard of Peter, Paul and Mary, may not know that they
had the big hit recording of "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." Bob
Dylan's version was not the hit.
Peter, Paul and Mary are very close friends of Bob Dylan. If you ever
get the chance to hear them sing in concert, be sure and go!
