Hello everyone--

The other day I read again the Wikipedia article about River Phoenix (FYI: Wikipedia articles are viewer-editable so the articles change over time), and I encountered the following quote:

"Phoenix once said in an interview, "I wish sometimes that I wasn't as conscious as I am". Prone to spells of worsening depression and compulsivity, River hinted in interviews at having been abused by the members of the Children of God, an oft-investigated cult to which he had belonged as a small child."

I was, hitherto, unaware that River suffered from depression; can anyone validate the statement? I've read Barry Lawrence's excellent biography, but don't remember Lawrence commenting upon this subject. (Some time ago I donated both copies of Lawrence's book to my local library, so I can not easily check this out--of course I could borrow back the book, but I'm a little lazy and would prefer a quick answer from the very knowledgeable members of ATW.)

Thanks guys...

Thomas

I would guess he was never officially diagnosed with it, but keeping in mind his (even "recreational") use of drugs, I would say it could be very likely. Something was not okay with River towards the end. I guess this all depends on how you define depression? We'll probably never know if he was clinically depressed--if his brain's chemistry was imbalanced in some way--but I belief he suffered from a lot of the symptoms of depression, yes. That, of course, is just an observational opinion, however.

i would say, without having known him, i cannot judge it and i have not heard of him being diagnosed as depressed. but i guess it's only natural that if your life goes a difficult way that you might feel sad. and that doesn't mean that you're depressed. i think there were things in river's life like the drugs that didn't do him good and that would have made him ill. it's natural to be sad sometimes, but i don't think he was depressed.

I found this on the Internet and supposedly River wrote it. I am not sure if he was depressed, but this song says a lot.

BLUE PERIOD

I never thought I could see
Such blue
As the ice I fell into

I never thought I could feel
Such blue
As the chill now embracing you

Most of us know where to go
When we need someone

I'm a fool
Too out of reach
I believe no one

This is not the way
I want to see your face
And this change could be
The death of you and me

Cause I opened the door
To such blue
Living flesh
Our blood shows through

If I could draw
A conclusion here
I'd say...
That the end draws near

Most of us
Have somewhere safe
To escape from the cold
We exhausted any trust
To think we can hold

And I'll never know
The ghost that wears your clothes
You must not know how close
To the edge I go

This is not the way
I want to see your face
Your desperate eyes reach to me
As blue as blue could be

Our sentence ends
With a blue period
Our sentence ends
With a blue period
