Someone posted on the other side a question about a song title involving the drugs that killed River Phoenix. I have thought about this for a long time and seeing this other message made it forefront in my mind, and I wanted to get it off my chest.

Ok... I DO NOT UNDERSTAND how someone like River who was very conscientious about health, safety, the environment and so forth could have died from a drug overdose. It's just mind-boggling to me. I did not know River personally and perhaps he was battling a lot of inner demons or perhaps he was insecure in Hollywood or felt overwhelmed... I do not know. I just find it very strange that someone who was so anti-destructive would've ingested drugs which he knew were harmful and potentially deadly. I remember reading an article not long ago which said he fussed at one of his associate actors for drinking a COKE soft drink while on the set... telling her it was BAD for her...a COKE! And he cried when one of his girlfriends ate seafood at a restaurant. I will never understand why someone who appeared very health conscious would've ended up dying from drugs. It all makes no sense to me. I have never done drugs, put have read that cocaine and heroin are very addictive once started. Oh well. Guess we'll never know what made him make those choices. From outward appearances, the fact of him dying from a drug overdose does not equal up.

Peace.

Back in 1993, River's passing was a major shock, I just could not believe someone like him would OD. Of course, I did not know much about him yet, besides whatever the press was feeding us.

But in retrospect, it is not that surprising, considering that his parents were hippies who did drugs themselves back in the day and for which drugs were a part of life. He also grew up with no guidance from any adult, was very sweet and naive about lots of things. Just throw in some Hollywood glitter in the mix and you have a recipe for disaster.

Thinking about River's early childhood among the Children of God, who knows what kind of abuse he was subjected to there and how he handled it when the memories came back to haunt him years later.

Also, being so much into music and hanging with the Red Hot Chili Peppers who were very much into drugs back then, you would think he got into this drug culture, or at the very least was influenced by it.

I know a lot of people who are vegetarian, won't smoke a cigarette or even take medication, advocate healthy living but have no problem smoking pot, doing coke and so on. I know it is contradictory but that's the way they are.

I personally cannot watch THAT THING CALLED LOVE because of the way he looks in this movie. I've seen parts of it and every time, it breaks my heart: you can definitively tell something is going on and that he is on something.

What strikes me is that a lot of River's fans have trouble to accept that he was a drug-addict. The squeaky clean image built by the media still sticks to him to this day.
