Well, I went today to find the infamous Hyde and Zeke's. It still exists, under new ownership, and in a different location. Good thing Barry wrote his book while these places were still around: Hardback, Kesl's, and H&Z. Things sure change over the years.

Yes, I agree. I started going to Gainesville in 1997 and spent a lot of time there this past summer. My husband and I even got married in the small town where River lived (I am a very devoted fan and I also fell in love with a Bed and Breakfast in the town, which is where we said our vows) and had our reception dinner at a Gainesville restaurant which is now long gone. I can't believe how much has changed even since 2000. So many downtown buildings are rundown and boarded up - ghosts of businesses past.

Whenever I walked around the downtown area, I tried to imagine what it was like when River walked the streets. I spent many days in his city(my poor, reluctant husband in tow) and there was just something so enchanting about it all. I walked around downtown, no doubt retracing River's steps, several times before moving to Los Angeles a few weeks ago. I will never forget those days and am thankful for the pictures that I have now. Gainesville isn't much more than a dot on the Florida map to a lot of people, but to me, it will always be a magical place.
