| Most people know this, I'm sure. But this is the book that River was named after, at least he's named after the River mentioned in the book. I'm reading this now. It's a new translation, meaning in 2000, and the forward gives alot of information about Herman Hesse's life and how he came to write it, which is very interesting. It took him several years.
I have had a fascination with Eastern religions for many years so this is kind of right up my alley and I can see why River's parents felt the same way. Especially in the midst of the hippy '60's in the US. In fact, even though it was originally published in the early 1920's, it experienced a huge revival in the '60's. So, River's parents were certainly not alone.
It's about a young man, named Siddhartha, who lived during the Buddha's time and his spiritual quest to find enlightenment. The very first chapter when the young man was describing himself and the author was describing how others saw him, it almost reminded me a little bit of River, but that association ended pretty quickly after that for me.
Anyone else read it and have any thoughts?

| I read it. I remember it ended when Siddhartha ended up taking over the ferryman. He finally found peace. Shmoe1

| I read it and i loved it. Its one of my favorites. Its not suriprising to know that River was named after it, since every time the river is mentioned in the book it makes you think about him, the way he thought and the way he lived.
i absolutely loved it.
