A while back (like a couple of months back?) someone posted a really cute memory on the imdb boards about River. I never got round to posting it in here, but yesterday the post was brought up on imdb by someone and I thought I'd share it with you guys. It's really beautiful. Of course I can't be sure that it's real, but I get a feeling it is. Who knows who wrote it? Some of the other regular users on imdb think it may have been written by Clara Balzary (Flea's daughter.) It could be, cause she says she was five when he was taken away, and Clara was born in '88. But I guess River had other friends with kids, so it's pretty impossible to figure out. Anyway, here goes:

"...Light the corners of my mind. Eh, ha ha.

I knew River from birth until 5, when he was taken.
I didn?t at all understand when i was small. I realize now, age and time bring no greater an understanding.

My father was his comrade. To me, he was pseudo-uncle, teacher of bandana wearing and Pete Townshend stance.
He stuffed more grapes into his mouth than it could hold, pushing his cheeks together to have them fall out one by one, leaving me in fits of giggles.
Mock-surfed on mom?s board set on a fender amp.
One cold winter, he bundled my friend, his sister and I under 3 layers of clothing and into his car to drive across town in a blizzard to pick up a belated birthday gift for a girl friend. A crystal cut glass bowl he let me choose.
He sang to me the songs of Fugazi.
Sent me a silver and amber necklace for my fourth birthday, which I wore as a bracelet for most of my 15th year.
Allowed me to squeal into his microphone so I could hear the reverb.
This is really all I own. Just flashes of memories that were probably once intact.

I don't remember being told he wasn't ever coming back, although i was. I do however, recall most vividly the unsettling somberness that hung in the air for a long time.
My dad still gets sad often. Not upset, just sad. He?ll often see River in things and in people.
My own memories are extremely hazy. They have become just second long frames in my head. Occasionally, I?ll stand next to some kid at a gig or a party and his scent will take me back to somewhere that feels foreign and familiar. Day's with River as a fixture.
Revisited Idaho tonight. Still mesmerizing. It made me remember. I can see why you all come here, I understand why you remember.
Stay beautiful."

that was really touching. i loved the way she described this little flashes. it could be flea's daughter, but who knows, it could also be someone else. i bet River hung out with people who weren't in the industry too.

i particularly liked the ending: I understand why you remember. Stay beautiful.

that was sweet

Hiya Hel

Thanks for the heads up. I LOVE true life recollections of River. This was especially poignant. Wish there were more of them.

Best wishes

Oh wow. Thanks for sharing it with us, Hel!
I love that story. It is so sweet. I can so picture River doing all this. It makes me so so happy!
And a little sad, because he is not here to do that anymore, but mostly happy
