There are many interviews and articles about River.

This is my favorite. To me it gives more of a sense of what it was like to "hang out" with River. (as opposed to the shorter, more sterile interviews where he seemed more guarded and closed)

This was 91. He was smoking joints during the interview. Talked about psychedelics and dropping acid. While he didn't want to portray drugs as positive from a role-model standpoint - he also did not take great pains to hide his own use. I find this interesting.

River's take on "clean living" and not using animals seemed to have less to do with personal benefits for his own body, and instead had more to do with not causing harm to other living beings. It wasn't so much about "clean living" and instead was "respect all living things". (do no harm to others, etc) He chained smoked cigarettes, smoked weed, drank alcohol, etc. Living in a hippie haven north of San Francisco, this approach is familiar and makes perfect sense to me.

The lead singer from Fromage has joined us after having spent an afternoon with another friend of River's who injested magic mushrooms.

"Yeah, and knowing him, you guys had one giant meaning of life seminar," River says, rolling his eyes.

"It got hairy," the singer concedes. "He kept saying, 'Why are there road signs? Why do books have pages? A silk shirt is really shit from a worm.' "

We're all cracking up, but River's mood seems to be giving him some trouble; there is an unfocused melancholy in his stare, an indolent resignation in the slouch that even Suzanne can't seem to snap him out of. "When he's mad, he can get pretty crazy," Suzanne remarked back at the house. But he doesn't seem mad, just sad.

Then he hears the rumor about a Japanese businessman who wants to take his Van Gogh to the grave with him, and he all but falls out of his chair, in what we have come to regard as the patented River-you-could-drive-a-semi-through-his-mouth look of astonishment.

"Oh, well I think that man should be kissed silly until he gives it up!"

"That's one way to do it."

"No, that's the best way to do it," River admonishes me. "Love conquers all. Even the assholes that don't want it."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I read this interview many years ago, and have revisted it since. I just love this part of the interview. It really gives an insight into River that is purely candid and shows the complexities within his personality. The moment where his mood changes, is also symbolic of a pattern that developed in Rivers personality that began in his adolescence, it was that marked melancholy.... it was that bigger awareness about things.
Anyway, this is definitely one of my favorite interviews of River.
I love it - an approach so rare, so true and sorely lacking in today's society. Thanks for sharing.
I remember reading the Time nov 93 interview with Joaquin at a restaurant, debating whether or not to give the seemingly stressed out waitress a hug. He ends up not doing it in the end due to the awkward timing, but his sincere intent is a beautiful thing.
"I'll just tell her I want to give her a hug, right? Is that too weird?"
Truly beautiful, this family.
I love that interview with Joaquin!!! I know what you mean about this really being a Phoenix "clan" vibration. These pure, genuine expressions of love and humanity they have expressed are so deeply inspiring. I have always felt a connection to the whole Phoenix family collective. Truly, to me, have been the family I would be wishing for.... not to say anything bad about my own family. Just that in their family there seemed to be so much more of a harmonic symbiosis and just pure love and conviction.... ahhh just beautiful.
