Hi guys!

I just joined here. I have enjoyed scrolling through the pages of info and reading stuff on the forum for a while so I thought it was high time I joined!

My main reason for breaking my silence on the site is that I am doing a dissertation on River Phoenix for a 'gender and sexualities' course at university. The thing is, I have no idea where to start.

As it is a course about gender I have to approach the essay from a 'Gay Icon' angle - but I can't find too much info on River as a gay icon.

Basically, I was wondering if you guys may be able to give me some info or point me in any direction. It is fun to be able to actually do a project on River, I just want to do it well!

I have been researching the best biography on River and I am torn between Brian J. Robb's 'River Phoenix: A Short Life' and John Glatt's 'River Phoenix The Biography'.

I would ideally like to get hold of Barry C. Lawrence's 'In Search of River Phoenix' as this seems the most comprehensive title to date but it is extremely expensive to get an actual hardcopy, and I don't own a Kindle which is the cheaper option.

Anyway, I would be HUGELY grateful if any of you guys could recommend one of the books, or another book to get me started on bio and also if you know of any articles, documentaries, books etc about River Phoenix as a Gay Icon that would be really very appreciated!

Thanks guys

In my opinion Barry 's Book is the Best choice. I haven't it finished yet but it shows a very personal River. It gives very much information that was new to me. I have read other biograhies about River, but Barrry's Book is without question the very best.

Hello
It?s interesting to read a post from another member about doing a dissertation on River. I?m writing my dissertation on My Own Private Idaho for my Film Studies degree. Has your question been set for you yet? Those biographies are useful but they aren?t scholarly in the slightest, though they would be a start..There are inaccuracies in the John Glatt one. Also, you could look at the documentary, This Road Will Never End, which aired on Channel 4 in about 1997 I think. It should be on YouTube. Its focus is about River?s influence within the gay community. The Gay Times wrote a very touching piece when he died. . There hasn?t actually been a lot written about River as a Gay Icon to be honest, aside from the odd magazine article where the subject is mentioned, sometimes by River. The best bet might be to start with looking at the press coverage from around the time My Own Private Idaho was released. Most of the articles are on myownprivateidaho.com. Good luck!

Ah - thanks for the reply georgie!

It took a while for my message to appear, I was worried I had done something wrong. Also, I have noticed the annoying spelling mistake in the title - is there any way to correct that or go back and re-edit the original post?

I don't suppose you know of somewhere that I may get Barry's book (an actual book - not kindle or anything) for a decent price? I am in the UK and usually use Amazon but it is very expensive on there!

Thanks again

This Road Will Never End is a very good source as is The Celluloid Closet.
I have a damaged book I can sell you at half price, $12.( I take Sterling too) it has a stain on the side, but all the text and photos are fine. problem is it still costs $17. to mail it to you.
