River got into his role that deep and that well. For me this story is great because he pulled it off.
When Van Sant sent the actor to hang out at the city nightblub, where the young street hustlers relaxed after work, owner Lannie Swerdlow threw him out, not believeing he was River Phoenix. ''He was ragged and he looked horriple. He said ''Im River Phoenix'' I asked to see his I.D. He didnt have any so I said 'Well if your River Phoenix you can certainly afford to pay the six-dollar cover charge' '' he said he didnt have any money so I told him to stop putting me on and had the bouncers escort him out of the club.''
It was only after someone working on the film, who happended to be at the club, recognised Phoenix and asked Swerdlow why he had thrown him out that the actor was allowed back in. Later, Phoenix filmed a scene at the city, where he has a narcoletic attack on the dance floor, it was not included in the final cut.
Eric Alan Edwards (Idahos director of photography) said ''He looked like a street kid, Ive never seen anybody so intent on living the role''

During the film River constantly looked to Van Sant for approval
''River was always doing things like ' i just love you ' and lunging to hug me'' said Van Sant ''Id freeze, maybe because my father used to grap my knee in a certian way. River didnt like that, so he'd hug me agian, and I'd freeze agian, and he'd yell at me.''

Mike Parker whos Rivers character is based on.
''Once we were going to this health-food store to get the makings for a feast what River was cooking,'' remembers Mike Parker ''He bought a hundred dollars extra worth of food and we took it to the old town, where he passed it out to the homeless people he could see. Thats the way he was''
Scott Green said Phoenix was always very generous to the portland street kids.
''I saw him give money to people a lot'' remembers Green. '' He wouldnt hand it like some big roller, but on a few diffrent occasions I saw him twenty-dollar bills to kids on the corner''

About Rivers drug use through the film
'' River had tried Heroin out of curosity a couple of times'' says Green '' He didnt inject it with a needle but he smoked it once during the film-he didnt get it from me. I dont think he liked it very much.

Hope you enjoy more to come

I like to hear about the good things too . It's tiring when people just mention his drug use, he was so much more than that. Thanks again for posting the stories and I can't wait for more!

Taylin...YES I am really sad when people break River down on his drug use (not sure if it's the right english term for it, but I hope you understand what I am trying to say)...well, he was only a human being too and every human being makes mistakes or bad decisions concerning your own's life, but it is soooo damn sad if all the good things he did and all he values he always tried to hand on were forgotten or not mentioned
